New Delhi. The Indian cricket team has to take part in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. After the embarrassing defeat against New Zealand, this Test series has become very important for Team India from a World Test Championship perspective. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has spoken about announcing the name of the new captain for the series to be played on the tour of Australia. He has suggested making Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the team instead of Rohit Sharma. It is learned that Rohit will not feature in the first two matches due to personal reasons.
Speaking to Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar said that if there is any doubt about the availability of captain Rohit Sharma for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, the selectors should announce the name of a new captain for this series. The 36-year-old Rohit can join the team as a player later. If reports are to be believed, Rohit will join the Indian team later on the Australia tour after asking the management for a break due to personal reasons. In place of Rohit, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah can lead the team in the first match of the series.
Gavaskar said: “It is very important that the captain plays in the first Test. If he gets injured, that’s a different matter. If your leader is unavailable in the first game, appointing a deputy leader puts a different level of pressure on them. It will not be easy for him to take on the responsibility as captain again. We read that Rohit Sharma won’t play in the first Test, maybe he won’t play in the second one either. If so, then I say that the Indian selection committee should now say that you need to rest, you need to rest, if there are personal reasons, then look at them.
He further said: “If you miss two-thirds of the games, you should only take part in this tour as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour because there should be clarity. It’s the captain’s responsibility because when we lost 3-0 here, it’s important to have a captain. It is absolutely necessary,”
