Why tires have spikes: If your car’s tires are old and worn out, you need to have new tires installed. But have you ever noticed why new tires have small rubber thorns or spike-like structures? These are called “spikes”, “nibs”, “gate marks” or “nippers” on the tire. Let us know why these thorns are attached to tires and what purpose they serve.
In fact, the rubber spikes on the tire are made automatically during manufacturing. The process of making a tire involves pouring liquid rubber into a mold and then using air pressure to properly expand it into all corners. This uses heat and pressure, causing air bubbles to form between the rubber and the mold. These bubbles can affect the quality of the tire, forcing the air out due to pressure.
How are rubber forks made?
The air pressure causes the air inside the rubber to be expelled through small holes. A small amount of rubber also comes out. The rubber cools and takes on a thorn-like shape. They remain attached to the tire even after being removed from the mold. These spikes show that the tire is new and has not yet been used.
Should tire studs be removed?
There is no particular need for these thorns on the tire, nor is there any particular benefit in removing them. These forks do not affect the performance or mileage of the vehicle. After a few days of use, these thorns will wear off and disappear on their own.
These small imperfections in the tire are just part of the manufacturing process and have no impact on your vehicle’s performance or mileage.
