Melbourne. Reacting to Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir’s sarcasm, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has hit back. On Wednesday, he said that India’s head coach was easily irritated. He also stressed that his comments on Virat Kohli should not be taken as an attack on the star batsman. He will be annoyed by his poor form for a long time.
Ponting had said in an interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC) that Kohli’s poor form was a cause for concern. Any other player would have struggled to retain his place in the Test team with just two centuries in five years. However, he also praised Kohli’s ability to stage a comeback. When asked about Ponting’s comments, Gambhir said that the Australian legend need not worry about Indian cricket.
Asked about Gambhir’s comments, Ponting told 7News: “I was surprised to read the reaction but I know coach Gautam Gambhir… he gets irritated very easily so I’m not surprised he hit back.” So I don’t expect anything from them. We have a long history against each other. I coached him at Delhi Capitals and he has a very lively personality.
Ponting, one of the greatest batsmen of his era, explained what he meant and why he felt things were taken out of context. He said, “This was in no way a dig at him (Kohli). After that, I actually said that he did well in Australia and is keen to make a comeback here… If you ask Virat, I’m sure he’ll be a little worried that he hasn’t been able to score centuries like the previous ones Tours to score “
