New York. Elon Musk met the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations. According to reports, this meeting between the two took place a day before this billionaire businessman was appointed as the new joint head of Donald Trump’s cost-cutting department.
CBS News, citing unnamed sources, said the meeting took place at Ambassador Aamir Saeed Iravani’s residence in New York and the purpose was to discuss ways to ease tensions between the two countries. However, the report does not make it clear whether secretary of state nominee Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Walz, who are staunch opponents of Iran, were aware of the meeting or not. On the other hand, The New York Times quoted two Iranian officials as saying that Musk’s meeting with the Iranian ambassador was “positive.”
What kind of game is being played behind the scenes with Iran?
The US does not have diplomatic relations with Tehran, but a private meeting with Musk led to a dialogue that allowed Iran to avoid meeting a US official. However, it is difficult to say what relations between the two countries will look like in the future. This meeting between Musk and the Iranian envoy could prove to be a major milestone in relations.
Meanwhile, NBC reported that Iran has assured it will not attempt to assassinate Trump. According to the report, this assurance came in a written message in response to America’s warning that attacking Trump would be an “act of war.”
Musk in action before Trump becomes president
Donald Trump has promised to end the ongoing war with Israel in West Asia and the war between Russia and Ukraine. By fulfilling this promise from Trump, Musk has proven himself to be someone who talks to many executives behind the scenes. It appears that the world’s richest man has a more important responsibility to fulfill in the corridors of power than the task of reducing government spending. During a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump also included Musk in the conversation. He is also said to be in contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump’s term in office so far is known for strict measures against Iran. The assassination of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) leader Qasim Sulemani was ordered by Trump. Trump had terminated the nuclear deal signed with Iran by the United States and other permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany and the European Union. He reimposed tough economic sanctions that largely prevent American companies from doing business in Iran.
