New Delhi. We all have seen foreign players playing under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma time and time again. This is a common occurrence in IPL. But what happens when Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli is captain in an international match and players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Mehdi Hasan and Mathisha Pathirana play under their captaincy? This isn’t a dream, it’s part of a plan that could soon come true. The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is planning such a game.
At the recently held annual general meeting of the African Cricket Association, there was a discussion about the re-hosting of the Afro-Asia Cup. This tournament was organized in 2005 and 2007. If the African Board’s plan comes to fruition, there may soon be a third edition. Cricket lovers know that the Afro-Asia Cup is played between African and Asian XIs. The African eleven mainly includes players from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Players from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan feature in the Asian XI.

Sehwag-Dravid played under Inzamam’s captaincy for the first time
The Afro-Asia Cup was held for the first time in 2005. Then Pakistan’s Inzamam Ul Haq took over the captaincy of the Asian team. Shaun Pollock took command of Africa XI. Graeme Smith was also captain of the African team. This team, led by Inzamam in the Asian XI, consisted of six Indian players: Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan.
Jayawardene and Shoaib Malik were captains in 2007
The Afro-Asia Cup was held again in 2007. This time this tournament was played in two formats, ODI and T20. Mahela Jayawardene captained the Asian XI in the ODI format. Shoaib Malik took charge of the T20 team. Sachin Tendulkar and Munaf Patel have been included in the Asia T20 team. Likewise, the ODI team included MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan.
