New Delhi. Padmashri Sharda Sinha, who gave his voice to Maithili, Bhojpuri and Hindi songs from ‘Kahe Tohse Sajna Ye Tohri Sajaniyaan…’ to ‘Pehle Pehal Chhathi Maiyya’, bid farewell to the world today. For singer Sharda, who traveled to Kokila in Bihar from Diara village in Begusarai as a daughter-in-law, this journey became easy thanks to her father and husband. At the age of 72, she bid farewell to the world during the Chhath festival. About five years ago, she said in an interview that after she got married, she was faced with her mother-in-law’s displeasure, but she didn’t stop singing. What kind of story is this, so let’s tell you…
The death of Sharda Sinha is a sad moment not only for the people of Bihar but for the entire country. Hardly any other singer can ever fulfill this shortcoming. Sharda was shocked by the death of her husband Brijkishore Sinha and was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in Delhi for several days where she was on ventilator support for the last few days.
“If my father hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere.”
Sharda Sinha’s father Sukhdev Thakur was born on October 1, 1952 in Hulsa in Supaul district of Bihar and was an officer in the Education Department of the Government of Bihar. Sharda Sinha loved to sing and dance since her childhood. During the conversation he said that without my father I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere today; he supported me a lot. Since I loved dancing, he taught me the Manipuri dance. In a conversation with Lallantop, he had said that he started his musical journey in 1971 by singing the song Nek. Sung Nek’s first song at his elder brother’s wedding, the lyrics of which were: “Dwar ke chhekai neg, pehle chukaye ae Dularua bhaiya”
The mother-in-law didn’t like the daughter-in-law’s singing
Sharda Sinha was married to Brajkishore Sinha, who lives in Sihama, Diara area of Begusarai, where she had to face opposition from her in-laws to achieve her dreams. Her mother-in-law objected to her wanting to become a singer. During the conversation, Sharda had said that her mother-in-law did not eat for three to four days in protest. My father-in-law loved Kirtan very much. There was a Thakurbari temple near the house. The father-in-law said, “The bride will sing bhajans in Thakurbari.” When my mother-in-law heard this, she turned red with anger. He immediately stopped his father-in-law and said, “You are driving me crazy.” Will the new bride go to Thakurbari to sing bhajans?
“Whether mother-in-law eats or not, I am with my father-in-law.”
Sharda had further told that I was very happy after listening to her father-in-law. The mother-in-law was angry, but I sided with the father-in-law. I thought whether he eats anything or not, I have to sing bhajans. I wanted an opportunity to sing and thought what would happen later would be seen. We went there and sang bhajan. A hymn of Lord Ram was sung there, the lyrics of which read: “I remembered Raghuvar, both brothers left the house towards the forest…”
When did the mother-in-law start to falter?
Sharda had told in the conversation that despite such a sweet bhajan, her mother-in-law’s mood neither wavered nor her anger subsided. When someone at home praised her, she didn’t respond. But there was a slight change in her when other people said that your daughter-in-law sang the wedding song very well. He had said that wedding songs were sung in the courtyard back then, but not over loudspeakers. I got the songs of Sanskar from the yard. Sharda had said that I didn’t know what I was doing, but that’s exactly what I did. Aangan songs came out, songs were played at weddings and then gradually music developed into an industry that is now a huge market.
“People’s love is a debt to me…”
About the love he experiences from people, he had said in the same conversation that he was overwhelmed by the love he had experienced from people for such a long time. This is our debt to society.
