Tata Motors, formerly known as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited (TELCO), manufactured commercial vehicles since 1954. In 1998, under the leadership of Ratan Tata, the company first manufactured a car called Indica. The peculiarity of the Indica was that it was a car the size of the Maruti Zen, with an interior space as large as the Ambassador and fuel economy as low as the Maruti 800. Indica was a purely Indian car. Although the first batch had quality problems and Tata Motors suffered a loss of Rs 500 crore in 2001, the Indica emerged as a bestseller. This was Tata Motors’ real entry into the automobile industry. The Indica changed the company’s direction and established it as a serious automobile manufacturer. Tata Motors manufactured the Indica at a time when India did not have a solid infrastructure to produce its own hatchbacks.

Ratan Tata had designed this car keeping in mind the needs of Indian customers. Not only did it offer more space and fuel efficiency, but it also had an attractive design. It was the first car to combine a hatchback with a diesel engine, making it a more affordable and practical option for Indian families. 3800 components, more than 700 dies and 4000 fixtures of this car were designed in Pune. Tata Motors introduced Indica V2 by correcting the shortcomings of Indica. This model regained customer trust.

Initially making losses in the automobile division, Ratan Tata and his team approached Ford in 1999 and offered to buy the automobile division of Tata Motors. Ford reacted very coolly to this. He also proved this through this.

Nine years later, in 2008, Ratan Tata acquired Jaguar and Land Rover from the same Ford for $2.3 billion. This acquisition was not only a business move, but also a response to the insult to Ford that established Tata Motors on the world stage.

Ratan Tata had a dream in 2003 – to build an affordable and safe car for the Indian middle class. The result of this dream was “Tata Nano”, which was launched in 2009. Nano is making headlines worldwide due to its affordable price and innovation. Tata Motors sold 2.75 lakh Nano units till 2018. Tata stopped producing Nano in 2018 due to declining sales.
